This statement caught my attention because I’d spent months digging into the Singularity movement. As I wrote in an article this Sunday, believers in the Singularity movement promise a time when a superior intelligence rules, man and machines merge and scientific progress occurs at an astonishing rate. In theory, the believers say, our imaginations can be transposed onto the world through things like genetic engineering, nanotechnology and virtual reality. The statement I heard comes from a character in the television show “Fringe,” which explores a number of Singularity-like concepts in front of a very mainstream audience. “Fringe” goes up against “Grey’s Anatomy,” “CSI” and “The Office/30 Rock” on the networks’ crucial Thursday nights. |

| Panorama of the East Coast | ||
| This Jan. 29 panorama of much of the East Coast, photographed by one of the Expedition 30 crew members aboard the International Space Station, provides a look generally northeastward: Philadelphia-New York City-Boston corridor (bottom-center); western Lake Ontario shoreline with Toronto (left edge); Montreal (near center). An optical illusion in the photo makes the atmospheric limb and light activity from Aurora Borealis appear "intertwined." Image Credit: NASA... | ||
